The Effects of the Algorithm in Culture and Society

Hilal Teke

The concept of algorithm has become an integral part of our lives. Algorithms are invisible parts of the written code and show the computer how a certain task will be accomplished. The algorithm lists what the computer needs to do to create a certain output, creates a plan. Experts say we shouldn't think of algorithms as good or bad on their own, and that we should pay more attention to the people who program them. Algorithms decide on vital issues related to our society: Medicine, public transport, outreach programs, criminal justice. We communicate with algorithms whenever we search Google, browse social media or use GPS. These are not just Google searches or shopping suggestions. We invited them to our courtrooms, hospitals, schools and made them take decisions that would change the way society operates. We shouldn't rely too much on algorithms, but we shouldn't completely remove them from our lives. Of course they're not perfect. They contain the prejudices of the people who created them. Despite this, they are incredibly effective and make our lives easier. While algorithms are great at diagnosing patients, they have not been good at judging because our social relationships are complicated for them. There are no major factors affecting our social relationship. In some hearings in the United States, judges used these algorithms to make decisions, but they were misleading and the desired efficiency was not obtained.
