SOCIAL AND CULTURAL IMPLICATION OF ALGORITHM BY DILARA NUR OKA

The algorithm plays an important key role in society and it shapes people's behavior, regular social life, political things, economy, etc... The algorithm helps people to make most of the decisions on issues digitally. It can be said that the algorithm has an increasing effect on society because news, political, financial, sharing in many fields in social media can spread quickly and even affect the direction of people's thoughts as we know.

An example of the social and cultural implication of the algorithm is the artificial intelligence used in the security sector, which has an algorithmic infrastructure. These artificial intelligence systems called risk assessment algorithms, help experts predict potential crimes and parole rules often decide who goes to jail. Although these systems, which also suggest which prisoner should be released on parole make the task easier in some cases, they sometimes use racially-biased historical data causing offenders of different colors to stay in prison longer. Certain discriminatory results from a lack of developers' diversity and from decades of social prejudices and enduring stereotypes that are reflected in most data sets. In this case, the algorithm actually provides helpful effects, and also it leads to racial prejudices. These kinds of biased systems exacerbate social injustices. Understanding these relationships is the way to determine resolve emerging bias-based problems. While talking about artificial intelligence, I can say that digital assistants are mostly developed as women, as an example of an algorithm with gender-based prejudices.

If we come to one of the most important issues at stake when talking about the algorithm, we can say that some social media applications collect data and use it without permission in various places. This situation violates privacy
