Selfies - Esen Deniz Sayıklı (180423007)

With the developing communication technologies, it is seen that the internet quickly affects every aspect of our lives. Such rapid development of communication technologies has not only affected the technological dimension but also the cultural field. Many concepts such as new media tools, social media, the internet, virtual world and social networks are among the words we use every day. Social media has changed the quality of photo sharing by affecting the visibility of the person, as well as the outward sharing of one's feelings and thoughts. As McLuhan said, in a world that has become a global village, everyone is familiar with events that are happening everywhere. For this reason, the person who is familiar with everyone shows himself even more through exposure. Social media is the most important step that facilitates this. Today, many people use selfie apps. The word selfie was first used by a blogger in Australia in 2002. The selfie trend has become such that this trend, which started with the increase of one's sense of self, is a social phenomenon that spreads rapidly around the world. Selfie, which has become a cultural genre, creates the problem of self-confidence and sense of self by making people visible and eliminating the public space (Rutledge, 2014).

The point that the selfie trend brings people is as follows; If no one likes or praises the person during the day, the photos shared on social media replace it. In other words, it satisfies the desire to be liked on social media. In this sense, the person believes that he can be a valuable asset only if the outside world approves. In other words, the person has started to create a mental disorder. The American Psychological Association (APA) has officially declared that selfies and sharing these photos on social media have been proven to be a mental disorder. And again, the University of California and the University of Michigan also conducted studies on selfies and named the new disease of the modern world as Selfie Syndrome. In the study, which stated that taking a selfie makes the person narcissistic, the other effects of selfie are listed as depression, attention deficit, voyeurism, addiction and hypochondria (disease patient) (marmarisguncel.com). In other words, the selfie has become a symptom of the society of consumption and spectacle, but on the other hand, it would not be wrong to say that it is a new ritual of the post-modern movement.
