Internet memes function as a form of language through which ideas and ideologies are mediated across online communities. They also serve as identity markers enabling online communities to create and maintain the boundaries of their social spaces. The word Memes was first coined by Richard Dawkins’s in his book “The Selfish Gene” which
referred to as ideas that replicate and spread like genes. When the internet network was
established, internet memes have risen rapidly usually with the purpose of humor. Nowadays, we all agree on the effectiveness of internet memes in sharing ideas and perspectives on the digital community that go viral and appear on most of user’s feeds on different social media platforms. Although you would generally laugh after you see a meme, there’s an underlining meaning usually convey a message either which is debatable or any viral news on the web. All of them share the same purpose of conveying ideas in a funny and hilarious ways regardless of their dimensions or stances. They have achieved this worldwide popularity since they are simple and not complicated in a sense that they are not stories or videos but merely images. For example, social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook are loaded with our friendly neighborhood Spiderman with various forms, thoughts and ideas. I am sure we all have seen the meme in which two spidermen pointing fingers on each other and regardless of the content, you can distinguish that this meme describes situations in which two situations which are very similar meet together. In conclusion, digital users should not take the advantages of the internet represented by memes for granted and must utilize it with definite boarders in order not to spread hatred, racism or false information.
