Beyond The Selfie



We always hear of the word “selfie”, we actually use it in our daily life. We take a selfie then we post it. However, do we know what the root of this word is? When this phenomenon has started? And what is beyond it? Selfie is a slang term for a "self-portrait," which is an image of yourself taken with a mirror or a camera held at arm's length. The Oxford English Dictionary named the word "selfie" as the "Word of the Year" in 2013. Despite the fact that there were some attempts of self-portraits in early ages using camera, a group of Australians developed a website and published the first digital self-portraits to the internet in September 2001. Years later, due to of social media selfies are everywhere. It didn’t stop with that only, but also the way you stand is crucial. The tiny raising of an eyebrow and the sideways smirk that says you're not taking things too seriously show knowing self-awareness. Afterwards, filtered were created to make people feel pleasure and raised their self-confidence. Moreover, according to some psychological research, selfies were linked to lower levels of grandiose narcissism, but uploading a photo shot by someone else was more strongly linked to self-reported narcissism. The 'fear of missing out' followed the same path. In opinion, it is true that selfie is a way to analysis someone’s personality, however, some people only post it in the name of creating memories and joy
