Algorithms In Today's Society

Serine Chouabi

Algorithms are majorly interacting with our modern digitalized world in forms of software by translating the tasks into unapparent coded numbered instructions producing big data. It is fair to say that computerized algorithms have shaped the routine of our daily-life. Demonstrating it in our social media platforms’ contents and recommendations gathered, organized and displaced by algorithms. They are basically taking decisions for us daily by using specific data and pre-judgements collected from us, whenever we use an application or a website. Everything is monitored once we agree on those privacy and user terms or cookies. Software engineers and programmers developed an on going system of judgements and classification based on people, habits, places, thoughts and objects. For instance, each Netflix account recommendation list changes from an individual to another because the algorithms are simulating what a person would like to watch based on what people with similar taste or location have enjoyed and on the person’s activity on the platform, also from the search history. Yes, algorithms are extremely useful, helpful and shortcut in the social, cultural and financial life but these good intentions sometimes can be double-edged sword, as stated by Rainie and Anderson(2017) Algorithms can rescue people, facilitate things and defeat chaos however, experts are alarmed as algorithms place a lot of supervision

in the authority of governments and companies, conserve prejudice, filter choices and opportunities, and can upshot in unemployment increase.
