Algorithm Culture in Decision Making (Elif Aslı Taşdemiroğlu Onbaşı -211004072)

Decision making process in classical terms were made by gathering information, defining and evaluating the alternatives and selecting the most useful one.

This pattern of behaviour can be observed common in many areas of people's daily lives. In a digitalized world the influence of tools that use algorithms is increasing day by day. These tools can be found in various industries and areas of life. E-commerce, recommendation systems, employment, health, justice, policing, banking and insurance are just a few examples where these tools are used in decision making. Alghorthms work with the data that is entered in to the system and create an output analysing the data that already loaded in the system. When you use a map application to find the shortest route from point A to point B, the application uses the map data and current traffic already stored in the database

and makes its decision based on that data. In other words, it uses the current and available data and assumes that the best decision can be made considering this data. This fact raises the possibility that these systems make biassed decisions. The decision is made considering the data that is already in the system.

This potential margin of error may be a small risk when you are choosing your way home from work, but when you are applying for a job or health insurance, decisions made based on these systems can actually ruin your life.

This fact highlights the importance of decision-making inspection systems that operate based on algorithms. Only in this way can these systems be sustainable and beneficial to all humanity by protecting the rights of minorities.
