The use of algorithms in our daily lives are aimed for optimizing the needs of every citizen and making life easier in order to avoid chaos. However, there are myths and misconceptions about the use of algorithms by the governments and corporations where various sensitive data can be easily shared to them and sometimes even fall into the wrong hands which could lead to misuse of power etc. When a person hits the search button in a website, the search engine goes through millions of webpages to display the content the person is looking for in a fraction of a second. All this is possible thanks to underlying algorithm, where sets of mathematical rules are planted in the software. Algorithms indeed play a key role in modelling and shaping culture. Everything we see around us is made of algorithms. Nevertheless, sometimes the implementation of algorithms created with good purpose leads to unforeseen consequences. Due to this, the topic of algorithms is central to this, and the use of algorithms in governments, and more precisely, algorithmic decision making has come under heavy and increasing examination. It is important to recognize that algorithms can be vulnerable to some significant weaknesses and shortcomings.
